    The disease known as acid sphingomyelinase deficiency (ASMD) is incredibly complicated and causes profound emotional distress for those affected and their loved ones. Acid sphingomyelinase deficiency is the result of mutations in the SMPD1 gene, which causes this hereditary disease. Inadequate levels of this enzyme prevent the body from breaking down sphingomyelin, a type of lipid.
